HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF MINIGOLF: FROM PAST TO PRESENT

The history of minigolf as we know it today dates back to the late 19th century, and since then, it has experienced steady growth, spreading globally. But what was the origin of this sport?

Minigolf is a sport full of fun, specifically designed to entertain, although major competitions are also organised.

Origins of minigolf courses: a historical look

The origin of minigolf goes back to the 19th century when it was first introduced in Scotland in the early 1860s. Originally known as “miniature golf”, it was created as a way for women and children to practise and enjoy the sport of golf in a more accessible setting. These early minigolf courses used to be made of artificial grass and had simple obstacles such as mounds and small ponds.

As the game gained popularity, more elaborate minigolf courses began to emerge. In the 1920s, minigolf expanded to the United States and became even more popular. Courses sprang up across the country, designed with extravagant themes ranging from medieval castles to amusement parks. These thematic courses offered a playful and stimulating experience that attracted both casual players and avid competitors.

In the 1950s, minigolf experienced a new wave of popularity with the emergence of indoor courses. These covered courses allowed people to play minigolf in any weather, leading to increased participation and diversification of obstacles. New innovations emerged, such as ramps and tunnels, that further challenged players’ skill and precision.

As time went on, minigolf continued to evolve. In the 1970s, 3D courses were introduced, offering an even more immersive experience. Obstacles became more complex, and special effects such as lights and sounds were added to create an exciting experience.

A glimpse at the early minigolf courses

It was James Barber who devised a minigolf course in the United States incorporating bells, whistles, and obstacles, thus marking a turning point for this sport. Dense gardens, fountains, patterns, and walkways created a genuine spectacle and challenge for players. In 1926, two young New Yorkers decided to install a minigolf course on the rooftop of a skyscraper, which turned out to be a great success. It wasn’t long before other investors realised the appeal of rooftop minigolf courses.

Over the next three years of history, New York City went crazy for minigolf, and by 1929 there were 150 courses on rooftops. However, the Great Depression brought about significant changes, including for minigolf. That’s when Tom, a minigolf course designer, emerged and created the most extravagant courses that had been seen up to that point. His designs combined complicated shots, hills, small obstacles, and flashy colours, becoming the favourites of minigolf players.

By the 1940s, the United States already had 4 million minigolf players. Don Clayton, founder of “Putt Putt Golf Courses“, sought to change things and contribute to the evolution of minigolf. From 1953, he designed a new concept of courses where the holes were considerably shorter, which allowed achieving a hole in one with putting skill, often requiring several optimal bounces to line up the ball.

The next step was the organisation of tournaments to establish minigolf as a serious sport. It became professional with the hosting of tournaments that offered cash prizes for the top-ranked players. Shortly afterwards, Lomma Lomma Enterprises Inc. introduced a series of eccentric mechanical obstacles. Animated hazards, revolving ramps, windmills, and flashing lights: anything was possible! These obstacles were not only visually impressive but also added a unique additional element to minigolf: precision timing.
